What is the right way to measure and to interpret the Waist-Hip Ratio?

The Waist-Hip Ratio, the official health indicator of the WHO (World Health Organization), is a measure of body fat distribution. The risk of illness increases along with the body fat's proximity to the organs due to the negative influence on blood lipid levels. The fat-binding "bad" cholesterol LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) rises while the tissue-protecting "good" cholesterol HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) sinks. Consequences include vascular constriction and oxygen deficiency in the organs. That's why measurement and early treatment are so important.

  1. Waist-Hip Ratio
  2. Provides information about body fat distribution
  3. Measure waist circumference at the smallest point
  4. Then measure the hip circumference at the widest point
  5. Divide the waist by the hip measurement
  6. The cut-off point for men is < 0.9 and for women < 0.85.
