What is the right way to measure and to interpret the Waist-Hip Ratio?
The Waist-Hip Ratio, the official health indicator of the WHO (World Health Organization), is a measure of body fat distribution. The risk of illness increases along with the body fat's proximity to the organs due to the negative influence on blood lipid levels. The fat-binding "bad" cholesterol LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) rises while the tissue-protecting "good" cholesterol HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) sinks. Consequences include vascular constriction and oxygen deficiency in the organs. That's why measurement and early treatment are so important.
- Waist-Hip Ratio
- Provides information about body fat distribution
- Measure waist circumference at the smallest point
- Then measure the hip circumference at the widest point
- Divide the waist by the hip measurement
- The cut-off point for men is < 0.9 and for women < 0.85.
